Detection of Postoperative Venous Thrombosis and Effectiveness of Prophylactic Measures

Studied With the Fibrinogen 125I Technique

Abstract

Fibrinogen labeled with radioactive iodine (125I) was the technique used to detect deep venous thrombosis in patients following operations. Forty patients over 40 years of age undergoing major surgical procedures were studied. Prophylactic measures designed to reduce venous stasis during the operation and postoperatively were applied in 20 patients. None of them developed venous thrombosis, while this occurred in six of the 20 patients in the control group (30%) during the postoperative period. The fibrinogen 125I technique is considered a sensitive and accurate method for the early detection of deep venous thrombosis. No postoperative deep venous thrombosis developed when prophylactic measures were used.
