Supraventricular Tachycardia Following Cardiac Valve Replacement
Ronald M. Abel, MD
AMA Arch Surg. 1970;101(4):537-538.
Abstract
A retrospective study of 503 patients undergoing cardiac valve replacement revealed that 23 patients (4.6%) developed supraventricular tachycardias in the immediate postoperative period. Six patients (26%) died directly in association with the rapid ventricular response during the episode of tachycardia. Following is a discussion of the serious clinical manifestations of these complications relative to impaired prosthetic function at rapid heart rates.
