Abstract
Inflammatory strictures of the common bile duct are rare. Their occurrence in three patients was unexpected preoperatively and their identification was exceedingly difficult intraoperatively, requiring duodenotomy in each case. Cholecystectomy and the insertion of a tube through the strictured area resulted in cure in all three. Although the common duct appeared to be severely damaged by the process, this experience seems to indicate that resection of the strictured area is not warranted. Ductal decompression and removal of the inflammatory process by cholecystectomy and choledocholithotomy should be performed when indicated.
