Microsurgical Technique for Esophageal Reconstruction in Growing Puppies

Changyul Oh, MD; Julius H. Jacobson, II, MD

AMA Arch Surg. 1972;104(2):203-205.

Abstract

We have used a procedure for end-to-end anastomosis of the esophagus in growing puppies utilizing microsurgical techniques and 7-O silk sutures. One out of 23 (4%) animals subjected to this procedure developed postoperative stricture and three died of anastomotic leak (13%). The remainder were free of clinical signs of stricture, although three of them showed some narrowing roentgenographically. It is concluded that clinical trial of microsurgical technique in the treatment of congenital esophageal atresia may result in a reduction of postoperative stricture formation and leakage.
