Equinocavovarus in Muscular DystrophyIts Treatment by Percutaneous Tarsal Medullostomy and Soft Tissue Release

Abstract
Talipes equinocavovarus is a late deformity in progressive muscular dystrophy. This condition occurs secondary to selected weakening and contracture of foot musculature, augmented by tarsal deformity, and eventually prohibits standing and walking. Percutaneous tarsal medullostomy with soft tissue release has been successfully employed in the treatment of four such patients (seven feet). All were male patients, ranging in age from 9 to 13 years. Follow-up has been from 27 to 44 months postoperatively. All patients are currently ambulatory without recurrence of deformity. This program has enabled them to maintain independent pain-free ambulation and has significantly delayed confinement to a wheelchair with its accompanying inexorable downhill course.
