Secretory Responses of Canine Fundic PouchesEffects of Acetic Acid on Antral Phase

Abstract
The changes in the antral phase of gastric secretion have been defined, following exposure of vagally innervated and vagally denervated canine fundic pouches to acetic acid. In both types of pouch, exposure to acetic acid resulted in reduced secretory volumes and reduced outputs of H+, K+, and CI-, but the outputs of Na were increased. These changes were compatible with inhibition of secretion and increased exchange-diffusion. Inhibition was less pronounced in the innervated than in the denervated pouches, but exsorption of Na+ was greater in the innervated pouches. The results indicated that exchange-diffusion was enhanced by intact vagal innervation.
