Reconstruction of the Aortic Valve

Correcting Valve Incompetence Due to Acute Dissecting Aneurysm

John J. Collins, Jr., MD; Lawrence H. Cohn, MD

AMA Arch Surg. 1973;106(1):35-37.

Abstract

A technique for reconstruction of the aortic base in persons with acute dissecting aneurysms of the proximal aorta involves insertion of a prosthetic cloth buttress into the dissection of the aortic base; this allows reconstruction of the aorta with preservation of the native aortic valve and offers protection against dilatation in the late postoperative period. Three patients operated on by this technique have been observed from 6 to 22 months after surgery with no evidence of aortic dilatation or significant aortic valvular insufficiency.
