Intra-abdominal HemangiopericytomaReport of Four Cases and Review of the Literature

Abstract
Four cases of intra-abdominal extrauterine extragastric hemangiopericytomas are presented and the English literature reviewed. Two of these cases occurred as retroperitoneal tumors originating from the duodenum. Both were resected en bloc. Neither case recurred locally, but both metastasized systemically. One patient with an intramural hemangiopericytoma of the ileum has survived 4 years free of disease after radical local resection. A patient with a retropubic, retroperitoneal neoplasm developed local recurrence and bone invasion after inadequate primary resection. He obtained a temporary objective response to irradiation. The intraabdominal hemangiopericytoma is demonstrated to be a highly aggressive soft-tissue tumor with great propensity for pursuing a malignant biological course. The recommended therapy is initial radical surgical resection, which in this series involved two extended radical pancreaticoduodenectomies.
