Sudden Death From Ruptured Intercostal Artery Aneurysm

A Late Complication of Thoracotomy

Stephen A. Heifetz, MD; Michael B. Zeichner, MD; Stanley Minkowitz, MD

Arch Surg. 1975;110(10):1253-1254.

Abstract

Following partial ligation of an intercostal artery at thoracotomy, a poststenotic aneurysm developed over a four-year period. It eventually eroded the ribs and ruptured locally, causing a pulsating hematoma that became infected and caused Escherichia coli septicemia. The aneurysm remained undetected, and further rupture caused death.
