We have reviewed the medical records of ten patients with acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome who required emergency celiotomy in a three-year
period. These operations are characterized by a high morbidity and
mortality. Careful attention to the support of these immunosuppressed,
malnourished patients if emergency operation is necessary may improve the
poor results reported herein.
