The surgical sciences have made significant advances in our understanding
of the immunological alterations associated with transplantation, trauma,
oncology, and wound healing. Immune surveillance, regulation, and effector
cell functions have been demonstrated to play integral roles in these
disease states. Immune manipulation may be an effective therapeutic
modality with even greater potential for the future. This study highlights
recent progress in our understanding of immunomodulatory interventions that
exploit manipulations in lymphocyte function in transplantation.
