The superior mediastinum is the subdivision of the mediastinum above the level of the fibrous pericardium. This is equivalent to saying the region above the plane joining the sternal angle to the intervertebral disc between the fourth and fifth thoracic vertebra. The anterior, middle, and posterior mediastina may be referred to collectively as the inferior mediastinum.1
