Sure to receive the tremendous success of its medical counterpart, The Washington Manual of Surgery has recently been published in its first edition. This work represents a collaborative effort by the residents of the Washington University Department of Surgery under the guidance of Gerard M. Doherty, MD, the principal editor.

This reference employs the familiar style and spiral binding of the series and is appropriately sized to be carried in the pocket of a clinical jacket. The "Foreword" by Samuel A. Wells, Jr, MD, explains the purpose of the manual is "to provide easy access to the most important information on a given topic." General surgical problems are clearly arranged by organ system, including classic surgical topics such as fluids and electrolytes, within an impressively outlined 632 pages and 42 chapters.
