This is a textbook designed for the medical student on a surgical clerkship. It specifically targets both the student headed for a career in surgery as well as the student following a nonsurgical career path. The book enters an increasingly crowded market of textbooks designed for the student audience. During the last few years, these textbooks have become more sophisticated, concentrating on the principles of adult learning that assist the busy student on a surgical clerkship. In general, the successful textbook has (1) adopted a problem-oriented approach to the presentation of surgical diseases, (2) covered diseases commonly seen in practice with practical information on screening and postsurgical follow-up, and (3) provided an opportunity for self-assessment to the student reader.
