Fundamentals of Plastic Surgery, written by Marks and Marks, contains significant core information regarding plastic and reconstructive surgery. These 2 authors represent contrasting backgrounds, one a board-certified plastic surgeon and the other a thoracic and vascular surgeon with a PhD in anatomy. Although this book contains minimal new information, it is an excellent resource for medical students and residents. The chapters are written with clarity, and the black-and-white illustrations, graphs, and tables deserve commendation.
The chapters on skin grafting, flaps, tissue expansion, microvascular techniques and cleft lip/palate repairs are particularly well written and designed. The chapter on burns contains fundamental information that would be of less interest to practicing, experienced surgeons. The fundamentals of laser therapy (including biophysics) and its utilization, are both timely and needed.
