Since its publication in 1913, An Introduction to the History of Medicine¹ by Fielding Garrison has been the standard reference book for students and amateur historians with an interest in medical history. In it, I am able to find reference to only four 19th-century New Hampshire surgeons. One is the ubiquitous Nathan Smith, described as "the first all–New England surgeon" in Gordon Donaldson's presidential address to the New England Surgical Society in 1977, who was in fact born in Rehoboth, Mass. Two, Reuben D. Mussey, born in Pelham, NH, and Dixi Crosby, born in Sandwich, NH, followed Smith as distinguished professors of surgery at the Dartmouth Medical School, Hanover, NH. The fourth, Amos Twitchell, was a comparatively obscure physician and surgeon who was born in Dublin, NH, and spent most of his professional life in Keene, NH.
