Branchial cleft abnormalities (cleft, fistula, cyst), when present, are remnants of the first, second, or third branchial cleft: (1) from the cartilage of the external auditory canal to the skin of the neck, beneath the center of the body of the mandible; (2) from the tonsillar fossa to the skin anterior to the sternocleidomastoid muscle; and (3) extending between the bellies of the sternocleidomastoid muscle above the clavicle.1
