Schein's Common Sense Emergency Abdominal Surgery is a self-described "small book for residents, thinking surgeons, and even students." It is edited by Dr Moshe Schein with an international group of contributors. Dr Schein is sole author of 18 of 24 chapters. It is divided into 3 sections: "Before the Operation," "The Operation," and "After the Operation." Devoid of any references, most of the statements and recommendations in the book are a combination of science and personal opinion. A few tables are provided but no illustrations. Each chapter includes at least one aphorism, many not attributed. In an attempt to emphasize the importance of physical findings and clinical judgment, Dr Schein leads off with an anti-imaging theme. His contributors present a much more balanced presentation of the use of computed tomography and other imaging modalities in evaluation of the abdomen.
