Traditionally, there have been many surgical texts written to provide surgical residents and practicing surgeons with an extensive knowledge of the basic sciences. From a plethora of atlases of anatomical descriptions for common operations to large volumes dedicated to advancements in the basic sciences, there have been numerous references covering the principles of surgery, the diagnosis and management of surgical disease, and even descriptive texts on surgical pathology. However, there has consistently been a void in providing practical hands-on educational materials for medical students and residents in surgical training programs.
Sherris and Kern have put forth a valiant effort in an attempt to fill the void that has left most of our academic teaching institutions with less time to teach medical students and beginning surgical trainees.
