The nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve is a variant in which the nerve passes from the vagus directly into the larynx at the level of the inferior horn of the thyroid cartilage. This variant occurs in 1 of every 200 cases, is almost always on the right side, and is frequently associated with an aberrant right subclavian artery.1
