IN THE June issue of a major surgical journal, a consensus statement was published that addressed the increasing concerns of editors regarding fraudulent and duplicate publications. The Archives of Surgery supports these principles and recognizes the concerns registered by our colleagues. We wish to expand our statement of purpose published in October 1992 in the Archives of Surgery.1
The ARCHIVES will adhere to the uniform requirements for manuscripts as outlined by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors.2 The editorial board will be increasingly vigilant about duplicate publications of the same material (even in several different languages) or minor variations of the same material ("salami science"). Thorough scientific review will continue to be the order of the day. Research models and methods must be explained with clarity and completeness. Conclusions should not be extrapolated beyond submitted data. This will not preclude visionary discussion as an outgrowth of these investigations. . . . [Full Text of this Article]
