THE UNIVERSITY of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) began in 1969 as a modest extension center in a corner of the city. Over 3 decades as an independent campus, it has grown into the state's largest employer and one of the nation's premier research universities and academic medical centers. Today, the UAB campus comprises 75 city blocks, and the university is known worldwide for its outstanding research, patient care, and innovative educational programs. In addition to its reputation for biomedical programs, UAB's expertise currently includes business, education, music technology, engineering, social sciences, and many other fields.
The UAB Health System presently includes not only a 908-bed hospital for tertiary and quaternary care, but also rehabilitation and psychiatry hospitals, 6 health schools, the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital, an affiliated community hospital (UAB Medical West), a health maintenance organization component (VIVA), and the Kirklin Clinic, a modern ambulatory clinic . . .
