This is the second edition of this publication. It consists of 10 sections, 70 chapters, 800 pages, and contributions from 100 authors. There have been significant advancements since the first edition in the field of minimally invasive surgery (MIS). New advanced MIS techniques accompanied by pertinent historical information and type 1 and type 2 data are noteworthy. The initial edition, which concentrated mainly on hepatobiliary techniques, has been considerably improved and includes recent developments in lower GI, foregut, and solid organ surgery.
The section on groin and ventral herniorrhaphy is particularly helpful, as is the experience with thoracoscopy. Karl Zucker, MD (recently deceased), and his colleagues have combined MIS with combined sonography, telepresence, robotic surgery, and handoscopy. Particular attention is called to the chapters on medical malpractice and laparoscopy and the socioeconomic views and concerns involved with these new techniques.
