AMONG MY favorite parts of the American College of Surgeons annual meeting are the receptions held by the departments of surgery. The receptions during the 2001 meeting held special meaning in light of the disaster in New York City on September 11, 2001. I attended my training alma mater meeting with the department of surgery from the State University of New York Brooklyn Health and Science Center (SUNY-BHSC) (Brooklyn). It was important for me to pay respects to the new chairman, Michael Zenilman, MD. When I had arrived at SUNY-BHSC in July 1982 for my residency, Michael Zenilman was a medical student there. He won the outstanding student award from the department of surgery, and we had performed an experiment together (the perfuse canine adrenal). Now he has returned to Brooklyn as the chairman.
