FOR MORE than a century, surgery in Hong Kong has been inexorably linked to education, first at the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese founded in 1887, and later at the renamed Hong Kong College of Medicine in 1907. Counted among the first graduates was the father of modern China, Dr Sun Yat-Sen. Teaching initially occurred at Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital when the College was first inaugurated. In 1911, the medical school became the Faculty of Medicine with the foundation of the University of Hong Kong. Teaching of clinical surgery moved to the newly built Queen Mary Hospital in 1937.
