THE MASSACHUSETTS General Hospital (MGH), founded in 1811 to care for the indigent citizens of Boston, is today the largest hospital in New England, with almost 900 beds and almost $1.5 billion in annual expenditures. The original teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, MGH, along with Brigham and Women's Hospital, is an academic anchor of the Partners Healthcare System, which also comprises 4 community hospitals, 3 rehabilitation hospitals, a psychiatric hospital, more than 1000 affiliated primary care physicians, and a variety of visiting nurse and home care services.
Eighty-four full-time academic faculty members staff the 10 divisions of the Department of Surgery: General and Gastrointestinal Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Trauma and Surgical Critical Care, Burns, Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Transplantation, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, and General Thoracic Surgery.
