The Department of Surgery is an essential contributor to the status of the Emory University School of Medicine as 1 of the nation's finest institutions for education, biomedical research, and patient care. Atlanta's large and varied patient population, Emory's extensive research facilities, and the close proximity and collaborative strategies of public health organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Cancer Society provide an impressive setting for the department's clinical, investigative, and training missions.

Currently, the department has 75 full-time academic faculty members staffing divisions of cardiothoracic surgery, gastrointestinal and general surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, transplantation, trauma/surgical critical care, and vascular surgery.
