INTRODUCTION
Dr Orlando: As I round in our intensive care unit (ICU), I am seeing more patients with open abdomens because of increasing recognition of the abdominal compartment syndrome in trauma and general surgery patients. We organized this panel to explore this timely issue. Dr Virginia Eddy will discuss the physiology of the abdominal compartment syndrome. Dr Lenworth Jacobs will then address the open abdomen in the trauma patient. I will follow with some remarks about the open abdomen in the general surgery patient, and Dr Wayne Stadelmann will talk about strategies to close the difficult wound after the abdomen has been opened.
