INTRODUCTION

I have chosen the theme of duty, responsibility, and honesty. As students, residents, and practicing physicians, this motto has been stressed and reaffirmed on many occasions. In these confusing times of medicine, I would like to again stress the importance of duty, responsibility, and honesty.

Surgery is a lonely life. As surgeons, we care for patients one at a time. Each illness is cared for to the best of our ability. On many occasions, we worry about our patients and their health. How we provide the best care is often a question of whether more can be done. Lonely is our care with concern and dedication to our patients. No one knows of the numerous calls, the long hours, and afterthoughts of our patients and their illnesses. Lonely is the life of a surgeon.
