Maine Medical Center is a 600-bed, independent academic medical center located in Portland. Portland and its adjacent community across the harbor, South Portland, together have a population of 85 000. The communities front on Casco Bay, a crenellated bight off the Gulf of Maine, whose waters are studded with spruce-covered islands and rock ledge. Portland offers a vibrant urban life usually found in much larger cities, including an excellent symphony orchestra, 2 resident string quartets, a museum of art and the Maine College of Art, a professional repertory theater as well as 3 seasonal production companies, and a summer opera company. Minor league professional teams in hockey and baseball add to the interest of the city as do brick sidewalks, 3 local breweries, and 2 brewpubs.
