The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) first opened its doors to students in 1795. It is the oldest state university in the United States and the only public institution to grant degrees in the 18th century. The University was sited by North Carolina legislator William R. Davie, near a settlement named "New Hope Chapel Hill." As the town grew, its name was abbreviated to "Chapel Hill," and it became one of the most renowned college towns in the United States. In 2004, the University enrollment for undergraduate students was 16 525; for graduate students, 8008; and for professional students, 2345, which included 625 medical students.
