Along with the recent significant increase in the quest for evidence-based medicine have come 2 important corollaries: knowledge of the results and the ability to improve them. Certainly over the last decade, numerous positive impacts have been made in surgical technique. Although morbidity and mortality rates have not decreased, the level of comorbidity in patients undergoing surgery and the age of those patients have increased. Therefore, even the ability to keep morbidity and mortality rates at a steady level while accepting increasingly higher risk patients is admirable. However, the results might not be translatable among surgeons or perhaps among institutions. It is incumbent on surgeons to be cognizant of their own results so that they can discuss them in an honest fashion with their own patients during the informed consent procedure.
