As with many great institutions of the 19th century, the story of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital begins with the vision of a single man. Peter Bent Brigham was born in Vermont in 1807. He came to Boston, Mass, as a youth and, as a creative entrepreneur, became very successful in the restaurant business. He wisely invested in real estate and local railroads and soon amassed a small fortune. Upon his death in 1877, his will stated that 25 years from his death, his estate was to be used for founding a hospital in Boston to care for the sick and indigent residing in Suffolk County (Boston and the surrounding county).
