The University of Wisconsin was founded in 1848, the same year statehood was gained. Located on the shores of beautiful Lake Mendota in Madison, Wis, this Big Ten university has a rich tradition in both education and research. Faculty in the Department of Agricultural Chemistry did groundbreaking research on vitamins A, B, and D and formed the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation in 1925 to administer the patents on their discoveries. The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation was the first organization of its type in the nation. One of its principal and more lucrative patents, Warfarin, bears the foundation’s initials. Investment income from this more than $1 billion enterprise and impressive extramural research funding mainly from the federal government combine to form the second largest research budget among universities in the United States.
