As Editor of the Archives of Surgery, I regret to inform the readership that the article titled "Mechanical Bowel Preparation for Elective Colorectal Surgery: A Meta-analysis," authored by Pascal Bucher, MD, Bernadette Mermillod, BS, Pascal Gervaz, MD, and Philippe Morel, MD, which appeared in the Archives of Surgery in December 2004 (Arch Surg. 2004;139:1359-1364), is a duplicate publication. This article violated prohibitions on dual publication because a substantially similar article was published in the Swiss Medical Weekly in February 2004 (Swiss Med Wkly. 2004;134:69-74), authored by Drs Bucher, Mermillod, Morel, and Claudio Soravia, MD. We also are simultaneously publishing a letter of apology from Dr Bucher.

The Archives of Surgery follows the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors' guidelines that state:
