We appreciate that Mr Shah and colleagues took the time to read and review our article. With regard to the specific issues they raised, we respond as follows:

  • Participation was voluntary as indicated in the article.
  • N indicated the number of respondents to each question. The total – N could represent the number of students who started but did not complete the survey, but we could not make this assumption because it was not necessary to answer all questions prior to submitting the survey.
  • The percentages of students interested or not interested in surgery were indicated. The percentage of students expressing an interest in surgery is consistent with the observed overall interest in surgery in a medical school class; therefore, it is unlikely that this is a consideration.
  • Our study was performed prior to publication of the literature on the use of CHERRIES.
