Reading the Small Print

I would like to bring to your attention the need for the ARCHIVES to post a revised version of an article we published in 2005—"Effect of Surgeon and Hospital Characteristics on Outcome After Pyloromyotomy" (2005;140:1191-1197). The authors used a large database that required them to sign an agreement with 14 bullet points of stated assurances. Number 4 stated that any time the number of observations was less than or equal to 10, no specific number would be used. Instead, "<11" would be listed. In Table 2, this occurred 8 times.
The reason for this requirement is to protect the patient so that personal identities could never be disclosed. Whether or not we as clinical investigators believe this could actually happen, we need to follow in detail the agreements we sign when using these large databases, which provide fantastic information for us to better treat our . . .
