We thank Palavecino et al for their comments. As they pointed out, we reported outcomes of resection in patients with advanced HCC according to the fifth—instead of the sixth—edition of the AJCC/UICC staging classification. Although we agree that the new classification is overall more accurate, most of the recent publications reporting outcomes of surgery for advanced HCC refer to the fifth edition.1-3 For the sake of clarity, we chose to present our results according to the fifth edition of the AJCC/UICC staging classification to allow the comparison of our results with those of other reports.
The main goal of our study was to reappraise the place of surgery in patients with advanced HCC and not to validate the classification system.
