This is the first volume of a series. Twenty chapters of 10 to 40 pages each have been written by different contributors. Modern bibliographies accompany the chapters. Most of the topics have been chosen more for their relevance to modern trends and controversial areas than for the breadth of their usefulness to a wide variety of surgeons. For example there are three chapters on cardiac surgery, two on transplantation, two on musculoskeletal diagnosis (radionuclide tracers, and arthrography), one on acute musculoskeletal injuries, one on immediate postamputation prostheses, and one on gastric secretion in relation to duodenal ulcer. But there are exceptions, and a few of the chapters are broader in scope. The first five chapters are on physiologic monitoring and support of sick or shocked surgical patients, and there is one on antibiotics in surgery.
