In the scant space of 200 pages, R. E. Billingham and W. K. Silvers have covered their large and expanding subject as only deeply grounded experts can. Aided by a series of particularly clear and informative illustrations, the sometimes complex experimental basis of the field is described with elegance and remarkable economy of words.

The book appears as one of a series on the "Foundations of Immunology" and has been prepared expressly for people who may not have a central interest in transplantation immunology but who would like to consult an orderly review of the subject. Even with the masses of literature which have appeared in this field, there are very few authoritative surveys which cover the whole subject in the sort of way which can only be achieved by one or two authors rather than in a symposium of many.
