From time to time, the ARCHIVES will contain symposia, conferences, or lectures of major interest to our profession. This particular symposium, "The High Cost of Hospital Care," was held at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston, on March 25, 1972.

DR. MOORE: I would like to introduce this seminar on hospital costs with a personal reminiscence. When I began the practice of surgery in November 1943, I considered purchasing another car. I was told that cars were difficult, if not impossible, to obtain because of the war, but if I could find \$575, I could have a new Ford. My first operative patient had a thyroid nodule; she was in the hospital a few days, and my fee to her was \$175. Her hospital bill was about \$217.
