To the Editor.—I read with astonishment an editorial by Richard Warren, MD, in the November issue of the ARCHIVES (107:641, 1973).
As I understand it, the proposed new certification in vascular surgery would require everyone to take the examination, including experienced vascular surgeons. Whatever value the test may have for vascular surgeons to come, the absence of a "grandfather clause" for people who are, and have been for many years, experienced vascular surgeons is ridiculous. I have no doubt it will lead to the ignoring of the new certificate on a large scale by experienced surgeons as another needless irritant in a world plagued by unnecessary and redundant regulations.
