This small volume represents the ninth edition of a very well known and very popular surgical textbook. The nine contributors have all been associated with Sir Charles; it is interesting to reflect on the great contributions that all have made in various parts of the United Kingdom and foreign lands. The text makes no pretense at a complete and thorough treatise on any one item and this is probably one of its strong points. However, as Sir Charles points out in his preface, at the present time, no one surgeon could hope to remain abreast of the details involved in all branches of surgery today. It was his earnest hope that the short outline presented would be helpful to surgical subspecialists who need information in other subspecialties not of their first choosing.
