DR. WILSON: Although we really have to thank the Gordon Conference for attracting two of our three speakers to Boston this morning, we are pleased to have them under any circumstances because we are excited about this seminar. I have entitled the seminar "Horizons in Tumor Immunology" because I hope the speakers will be presenting a synthesis of new ideas rather than any large series of treated patients.
Immunotherapy is not really a new concept, but lately it has gained perspective and prominence. Contributing to this increase in interest has been the growing sophistication of investigations on many fronts and many disciplines; evidence of our capability to perform immune manipulation, particularly in the field of transplantation; and, finally, the realization that more aggressive surgery does not necessarily produce higher cure rates in cancer.
