This is a well-organized and comprehensive textbook. A new chapter on patient monitoring, and extensively revised, and in some instances completely rewritten, chapters are presented in this second edition. It contains 52 chapters written by 59 authors who have actively contributed to their fields. The first quarter of the book is devoted to general principles of physiology and care applicable to surgical patients. The remaining three quarters are concerned with diseases of specific organ systems, and include the surgical specialties. The overall excellence of the first edition has been improved, even though the depth and completeness of the coverage still vary.

Each chapter is authoritative. The format provides a solid foundation on which controversy can be based, since each of the authors presents a logical and thorough approach.
