To the Editor.—I should like to criticize the use of the term exocrine in the article by Drs. Anderson and Perry (Arch Surg 110:69, 1975).
The apocrine glands are just as much exocrine glands as are the eccrine glands: both secrete externally by a duct. The opposite of exocrine is not apocrine but endocrine, and the opposite or counterpart of apocrine is not exocrine but eccrine.
The authors have, however, a legitimate complaint against the manuscript editors who engineered the change.
