The third edition of Gibbon's Surgery of the Chest, edited by Sabiston and Spencer, is an outstanding revision of a time-honored textbook in the field. While it has retained the organization and format of the earlier editions, it has been expanded to cover the controversies and accomplishments of the past seven years. No chapter has escaped in this thorough and highly successful endeavor.

Perhaps the single most impressive and helpful addition to the text is the inclusion of discussions by multiple authors in areas where no single approach to diagnosis or therapy has met with wide acceptance. These discussions have augmented such chapters as the one entitled "Tracheostomy and Assisted Ventilation" to include the most recent types of endotracheal tubes and respirators in use, while retaining the important information of the past.
