This is a well-written monograph that covers all aspects of ileostomy surgery—preoperative, operative, and postoperative. The foreword by Stanley J. Dudrick summarizes and praises the scope of the book.

The author introduces the subject with a comprehensive historical section relating the role of surgeons and others who developed and perfected ileostomy.

The operation, ileostomy, is described and well illustrated to clarify various techniques. Much attention is given to preoperative and postoperative care, with special emphasis on nutrition and parenteral hyperalimentation.

The chapter on ileostomy care is complete, and is followed by three chapters that present in an interesting manner normal ileostomy physiology, the pathogenesis and management of ileostomy diarrhea, and metabolic and mechanical complications of ileostomy. These four chapters combine to give a total picture of an ileostomy, its function and its problems.
