The first American I met on my first visit to the United States many years ago was a taxi driver, who took me from the airport to my hotel. When he heard that I was from Sweden, he started the conversation by saying, "What about sex in Sweden?" On my last visit to the United States, I also had an interesting conversation with a taxi driver. This time the introductory question was "What about socialized medicine in Sweden?" Even if Sweden is a very small and insignificant country when compared with the United States, it seems that there are at least two aspects of Swedish society that are of interest to the American public even on a nonacademic level. This article will deal with the last mentioned of these two subjects.
