Occasionally, in the field of medical literature, a bijou appears, and this small volume is one. In a few pages, Dr Mansfield has analyzed more than 300 reports and studies concerning the treatment of breast cancer. He has resisted the temptation to allow this work to become a fount of figures, in the style of a Department of Agriculture publication.

Succinctly and objectively, he has summarized an awesome amount of data and has concluded that a patient with clinical stages I and II disease "would have an equal chance of survival regardless... of the... techniques used": extended radical mastectomy without postoperative irradiation; radical mastectomy with or without irradiation (preoperative or postoperative radiation therapy is able to decrease the recurrence, but may not be able to increase survival); modified mastectomy with or without irradiation; simple mastectomy with postoperative irradiation; or local excision with postoperative irradiation.
